Our Story: A Testament to God’s Faithfulness

Bethel Evangelical Church of Michigan began as a dream in the hearts of a few faithful believers who longed for a spiritual home that would honor both their Ethiopian and Eritrean heritage and their deep commitment to Jesus Christ. As the psalmist wrote, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1). We can testify that God Himself has been the architect of our church family.

This universal quest for meaning is not accidental—it is woven into the very fabric of human consciousness by our Creator. As Augustine of Hippo famously wrote in his Confessions, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” This restlessness, this deep-seated longing for something beyond the material world, points to our divine origin and our eternal destiny.

Meaning of Bethel

On a fortunate night, after dreaming of a ladder to heaven and receiving God’s promises, Jacob named the place Bethel, meaning “House of God” (Genesis 28:19; 35:15).

For us, Bethel is more than just a name; we take its meaning literally. Join us!

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
(Ephesians 3:20-21, ESV)

Our Journey Through Time

Dr. Alemu Fite and Wudnesh Maru are the founding leaders of Bethel Evangelical Church of Michigan, a ministry born out of prayer, calling, and a deep burden to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. Having moved from the United Kingdom to Michigan in 2005, they continued faithfully in ministry while also working full-time in the secular world, demonstrating the biblical model of servant leadership and sacrificial dedication to God’s calling.

From the earliest days of the church, they have devoted themselves to the teaching of Scripture, shepherding of believers, and the spiritual formation of the church community. Their ministry includes Sunday preaching and teaching, weekday Bible studies, children’s discipleship, pastoral counseling, prayer gatherings, and both in-person and virtual spiritual care. Their leadership is guided by the conviction that the church must be built upon the authority of God’s Word, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the lordship of Jesus Christ.

Before relocating to Michigan, Alemu and Wudnesh were already deeply involved in ministry among Ethiopian and Eritrean Christian communities across Scotland. With great love and perseverance, they regularly traveled between Aberdeen, Dundee, and Glasgow, often driving long distances to serve alongside local ministers. Their willingness to sacrifice time, comfort, and personal resources reflected their passion to strengthen believers and encourage unity in the body of Christ.

Dr. Fite’s teaching ministry is marked by strong biblical conviction, careful exposition of Scripture, and encouragement toward thoughtful and faithful engagement with God’s truth. He emphasizes that believers should seek wisdom from the Word of God while cultivating spiritual discernment and a sincere pursuit of truth. Together, Alemu and Wudnesh model humility, respect for others, and Christ-centered leadership, always pointing believers to the Lordship of Jesus Christ as the foundation of faith and life.

Through prayer, service, and faithful teaching, they continue to dedicate their lives to building a community of believers rooted in Scripture, empowered by the Spirit, and committed to glorifying God in all things.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
(Romans 1:16, ESV)
